In Conversation with Shrimps | Q&A with Hannah Weiland

By now, you'll all know and adore Shrimps for their unique and ultra-feminine collections. Here at Coggles, we are a massive advocate for the London based label and the cruelty-free ethos behind the brand. As a focal USP, Shrimps collections are PETA- approved, which teamed with the dreamy designs, creative campaigns and runway shows have earned the brand a cult fashion status and following of IT girls.

Now as we move into Autumn Winter their stunning clothing collection are what's grabbing our attention, coveted pieces featuring scalloped collars and traditional prints. Read on for our one to one with the brains behind the brand, Hannah Weiland herself as we talk about everything from sustainability to wedding dresses.

#1 How much did your time in education help you to launch Shrimps?

I launched Shrimps whilst I was studying Surface textile design at LCF, before that, i also studied History of Art. Both really inspired me, from research to design techniques.

#2 We love the quirkiness of the brand, where do you get your inspiration for the designs as well as the creative graphics, editorials and shoots?

I mainly get my inspiration from art, and other creative inspirations such as literature, music and architecture.

#3 Coffee or Tea?

 Tea, always.

#4 Are there any particular AW trends you’ll be adopting?

I don't love following trends...

#5 You designed your gorgeous wedding dress, what was the inspiration behind the design and where is it now?

My dress was embroidered with drawings depicting the relationship of me and my now husband. I drew symbols and doodles of things like the place where we first met, our favourite painting at home, our pets etc. It was covered in confetti after the wedding, which I loved but I felt it was best to get it dry cleaned and then wrap it up to protect it. It is now in the cupboard at my parent's house, where we got married.

#6  Shrimps is passionate about sustainability and cruelty-free fashion. What does the brand have planned for the future to maintain this?

Shrimps launched as an ethical brand which it will always be, we are also very focused on sustainability across all aspects of the business. We are looking to make our packaging 100% recyclable and are working with mills to develop recycled and sustainable fabrics. It is a constant focus of the business that will only increase now everyone (mills, factories etc) are also looking towards a sustainable fashion industry, a combined effort and approach is so important. We are also involved with an amazing project called 'One Tree Planted', where we plant one tree for every item sold on our website.

#7 Shrimps accessories have been a huge hit with IT girls like Alexa Chung and Pixie Geldoff, how important do you think social media has been in growing the brand?

I think social media, especially Instagram is a huge asset, especially in building a brand. Shrimps launched around the time Instagram really started kicking off, I believe it has been instrumental in the success of Shrimps.

#8 What’s next for Shrimps?

We have just had LFW, it has been such a busy time but I love it.

#10 Dream getaway?

Italy, always!

#11 Which is your favourite accessory from the collection?

I love the Hera bag, it was inspired by needlework samplers, an embroidery or cross-stitch produced as a specimen of achievement.
Pre-Fall ‘21 Scarlett Coat

#12 What’s in your bag?

Rose lip balm, Diptyque perfume, my paper diary (I prefer this to a digital diary) and my phone

#13 How important do you find fashion month?

I think it is really important!
