The World’s Longest Elevated Cycling Path
Copenhagen-based architecture studio DISSING + WEITLING has designed an elevated cycling path in the Chinese city of Xiamen, and at a length of 7.6 kilometres, it’s the longest of its kind in the world.
The Danish office – who designed the award-winning Bicycle Snake in Copenhagen – have worked on several projects over the past decade that focus on encouraging bicycle use in cities, as well as green initiatives and urban development. The Xiamen Bicycle Skyway was designed due to an increase in popularity in cycling in China’s cities – mostly due to regular traffic jams, efficiency and increasing health and environmental consciousness.
The cycling path is China’s first ‘bike lane in the sky’. It covers five of Xiamen’s major residential areas and three business centres, and provides commuters with access to public transport as well as shopping centres and public buildings. Measuring at 4.8 metres wide, it allows several cyclists to travel next to each other, while its sleek design fits seamlessly into a 21st century city.
