KENZO’s Music is My Mistress
KENZO is fast becoming known as much for its unique seasonal campaigns and unconventional advertising as its eclectic, vibrant collections and that iconic tiger print. This is the brand that chose Spike Jonze to direct a short film for its first fragrance launch, featuring Margaret Qualley throwing herself into the role of riotous dancer – bringing an essence of indie cinema to an otherwise-glossy ad industry.
For its AW16 campaign, creative directors Carol Lim and Humberto Leon enlisted Carrie Brownstein to create
The film was directed by Kahlil Joseph – the man behind Beyoncé’s Lemonade, FKA Twigs’ Video Girl and short film Until the Quiet Comes, scored by Flying Lotus’ album of the same name. Joseph’s works are incredibly visual and thought-provoking and Leon and Lim’s choice to tap into his aesthetic was bold, interesting and unique (although, we wouldn’t expect anything less from this duo).
Music is My Mistress stars Grey’s Anatomy actor Jesse Williams, Black-ish actress and recent Golden Globe winner Tracee Ellis Ross, musician Kelsey Lu and Ish, where music is the central character of an unfolding drama. Part music video, part trailer, the film takes advertising to the next level, telling a story as it goes. Of course, it’s incredibly stylish too, with all clothes coming from KENZO’s SS17 collection.
