Mid-Century Cabins in Upstate New York

In the Hudson Valley region of upstate New York, Lang Architecture has developed a collection of cabins designed for Manhattanites who want an architect-designed weekend getaway a couple of hours from the city - without the fuss.

The studio developed 26 homes on 131 forested acres (named Hudson Woods), each one integrated into the natural surroundings, using natural materials and strategically-placed lots to ensure any impact on the existing landscape is minimal. Taking inspiration from Scandinavian and mid-century design, the cabins are large yet simple, the exterior walls clad in wood and floor-to-ceiling windows used to bring natural light in, while also making the most of the forest that surrounds them.

Inside the living and dining area is open-plan, with white oak running throughout complemented by neutral shades and mid-century modern furnishings. The outside space is celebrated through the use of open-air terraces, low-lying swimming pools and landscaped areas featuring native plants and vegetable gardens. When the outdoors is too cold to endure, wood-burning stoves and rich textiles inside turn the cabin into a cosy winter hideaway.
