London Fashion Week Men’s: Bobby Abley AW17
London-based designer Bobby Abley has been creating contemporary menswear with more than a hint of nostalgia and tongue-in-cheek style for his eponymous label since 2012. Now a firm favourite at London Fashion Week Men and with a loyal cult following, Bobby Abley is giving a new meaning to men's fashion.
For Autumn/Winter '17, Abley took inspiration from TV show Power Rangers, tapping into his favoured nostalgic references as well as the '90s streetwear trends that has been creeping into fashion in the past few seasons. The influences from the show ranged from the obvious (the 'Power Up' t-shirts and Power Rangers' printed sweatshirts in the colours of the characters, complete with helmet tucked under one arm) to the more subtle (hair-covered jackets in primary colours and straps tied around the wrist and waist as a nod to martial arts).
The '90s was a focal point throughout, seen in the use of chokers as accessories, baseball caps, head-to-toe tracksuits and the addition of female models with slicked-back pony tails tied with a scrunchie, large hoop earrings dangling from the ear. Abley made it contemporary though and relevant, through the use of rich textures and relaxed shapes, adding the odd neutral tone and dark detailing as an antidote to the bright and bold pieces.
