10 Festival Style Lessons Coachella 2015 Taught Us
Dubbed the ‘fashionista’s festival’, Coachella is where the beautiful people head to hear their favourite bands and dress head-to-toe in boho chic. Flower crowns, floaty dresses and next-to-nothing clothing reign supreme in this desert-based festival in Indio, California (Glastonbury it is not).
Here are the 10 festival style lessons Coachella 2015 taught us…
The festival staple is the denim short. Easy to throw on, they work with every style aesthetic and will see you through the entire weekend. The Coachella set loves denim shorts, especially if they’ve been cut off from a pair of old jeans, complete with frayed edges.
Flower crowns were still in abundance at Coachella this year, but the statement hat became the new head gear of choice. Oversized fedoras and floppy 70s styles were seen on many a festival-goer’s head; we love how this woman has accessorised her black hat with a bunch of white flowers.
Coachella is Woodstock for the new generation. Festival-goer’s pay homage to the 1969 festival through emanating the free-love, boho style of the late '60s/early '70s. This year maxi dresses, fringing, head scarves and crochet were seen all over Coachella’s fields.
A fashion era that has enjoyed a resurgence in the past couple of years, the '90s are now officially ‘vintage’. Those who didn’t go down the '70s route opted for the more recent decade, wearing minimal monochrome, oversized shirts, chokers and chunky footwear.
Tall gladiator sandals are having a moment. Seen at Valentino and Chloé this season, the trend has made its way from the runway to the street (or field, in this case) and at Coachella they came in all shapes, sizes and colours. The key to this look is to keep your shorts, dress, skirt or playsuit short to let the shoes make a real impact.
Florals are always around in spring/summer but this year Coachella offered up a new print: palm. Big, bold and green, it was seen on maxi dresses, co-ords and '70s-style wrap dresses. Simple gold jewellery works best with this print.
Long and floaty, short and embroidered or silky and hooded, the Coachella set were draping kimonos over their perfectly styled outfits. Enough to act as a cover-up, they’re light enough to wear in the summer sun and can add an extra print or texture to a simple outfit.
Every year brings up a new sunglasses trend: aviator, wayfarer, oversized, cat eye…the list goes on. Coachella 2015 taught us that the style to go for is round and mirrored. Whether they’re classic with gold metal frames or rimmed with purple Perspex, round sunglasses are the shape of the season.
For the past couple of seasons, tonal dressing has become the new colour-blocking; a chic, more elegant take on the trend. An outfit in full white or different shades of the hue creates a fresh look for spring/summer. Make it festival-ready with bold accessories
Statement jewellery goes hand-in-hand with festival style. At Coachella, delicate body chains were the accessory of choice, worn with crop tops and bikinis to accentuate the pieces.
