Fashion’s Take on Utilitarianism
Utilitarianism: the approach to uniform dressing that has come up time and again in fashion’s continued love affair with military-inspired clothing. Maharishi is a brand whose collections are famously built around military wear, using the styles to showcase its anti-war ethos. Universal Works does vintage-inspired workwear and utilitarian everyday pieces unlike anyone else. Inspired by the working classes in the 1970s, founder David Keyte mixes those hardworking utility designs with contemporary details – and the SS17 collection is no different. This season, inspiration came from revolution and beatnik poetry of 1960s America, resulting in a collection of khaki overshirts, boxy t-shirts and military-inspired trousers.
