Another fashionmonth has come and gone, leaving us attempting to collect our thoughts and realign our wardrobe to a new season of trends and references. This season saw the revival and the renaissance of trends both new and old, as we saw 1990's silhouettes and 1790's detailing side by side with fresh ideas. From New York to Milan, there was a lot to take in. Drawing your attention to the most prominent details and patterns, here are the top AW20 trends from this fashion month.#1 90's skin
The 90's saw a come back for AW20 but in a new way. Rather than revamping the 90's grunge trend, designers including Jacquemus and Off-White took reference from the supermodel era as we saw more glamorous takes on the decade. Jacquemus sent models down the catwalk in the classic slip dress silhouette that was beloved by a young Kate Moss, signalling that spaghetti straps are back in. With Jacquemus’ barely-there straps and off-the-shoulder cropped cardigans that Rachel Green would’ve been proud of, and Off-White’s take on hip-hugging co-ords, AW20 trends say minimalism can be sexy.#2 Checks
A pattern we saw all over the AW20 runways was checks; a timeless autumn essential. In Milan Versace kept it classic with a checked houndstooth, levelling up the traditional check into a bold statement in power red. Meanwhile, Gucci and Lanvinopted for a more modern colour palette, buying into the duck egg blue trend that we spotted at several shows. While Lanvin kept their checks sleek, patterning trench coats and midi dresses, Gucci presented an exaggerated heritage check at their regal show, nodding to references from the church to young Princess Charlotte. Clashing checks in a neutral colour palette is definitely something we’ll be looking to add to our wardrobes ASAP, levelling up our tailoring with this ever-trending pattern. #3 Polka Dots
Another key pattern we spotted and one of our favourite AW20 trends was the spattering of polka dots we saw coming down the runways. Keeping it firmly vintage-inspired, designers like Chloe, Givenchy and Rodarte nodded to the women of the 60's and 70's with mid-length polka dot dresses in silky textures. While Rodarte kept it sickly-sweet with ruffled collars and pastel tones, Chloe and Givenchy kept the 70's obsession alive and well with flowing boho shapes and folk detailing coming from western-style boots and earthy hues of blue and brown. Whether you sway more towards the domestic or the rustic, polka dots is one of the easiest AW20 trends to adopt into your wardrobe.#4 Long Denim Skirts
Possibly as a push back against the extravagance and lux seen across the industry, designers including Balmain, Tom Ford and Chloe rejected leather and velvet in favour of the casual denim. Reimagined from the one you remember your mum wearing and more formal than the A-line mini skirts Alexa Chung had us all wearing, AW20 runways saw a clear trend of long denim skirts in classic indigo tones. Instantly wearable, Chloe’s take on the trend with a large front slit would look just as chic dressed up with sandals and a crop top as it does with this distinctively 70's look. Meanwhile, Tom Ford’s take strays more into grunge, pairing the bold blue denim with black and gold. Just as wearable in summer as it is for AW20, we think we’ll be investing in some longline denim.#5 Leather Trenches
Outerwear was dominated by leather, shown in fresh cuts and colours. City-wide shows appeared to shrug off the classic leather biker jacket in favour of a more feminine cut. Across the board, we saw leather being used to tailor suit jackets, trousers, dresses and more, but none more wide-ranging than the leather trench coat which seems set to be a new wardrobe staple. While Louis Vuitton kept their cut vintage-inspired with a 70's fur collar and cuffs, Fendi offered a more futuristic take as Bella Hadid graced the runway in a structured trench that exaggerated her shoulders and waist. But when it comes to leather coats, our eyes are firmly on Saks Potts. We truly haven’t stopped dreaming about their blue leather trench since we saw it… FashionAW20 Men's Fashion Trend Report

#6 OTT romance
We had noticed whispering of the romantic, french revolution trend and then Moschino sent their models down the runway in Marie Antoinette wigs to make it undeniable. From ruffles collars to layered skirts, the 1700's seem to be having their biggest revival yet as the romantic trend this season was unmissable and exaggerated in both the fashion and staging of shows. Gucci’s AW20 show felt reminiscent of Vivienne Westwood’s iconic 1985 Mini Crini show, displaying exaggerated, childlike regality with a hint of darkness, like a bratty gothic princess. Meanwhile, Zimmerman and Brock kept things light and angelic with ruffles of bright material and classic romantic floral and baroque prints. While the runways went OTT and almost satirical with the trend, we’ll be wearing it toned down with exaggerated collars, lux pink and gold colour palettes and regal prints.#7 Sunset tones
When it comes to colour, all AW20 trends were touched by one particular colour palette. The runways were dominated by sunset tones of pink, red and orange. Even with more neutral shows such as Jacquemus, we noted that the hues were kept on the warmer side, setting us up for a sunny season in our wardrobes.Marc Jacobs sent models walking down the runway side by side in power red and warm earthy tones, while Tom Ford opted for bold orange colours reminiscent of the sun. Our favourite was Alberta Ferretti, giving the pink and red clash an AW20 update by warming up the tones and adding some more orange hues, bringing a glowing sunset to the runway. #8 Sparkling silver
One of the boldest AW20 trends saw fashion month dive into maximalism, as several designers made us fall head over heels for sparkling silver pieces. Is it too early to start thinking about party season outfits? Because Off-White's fully silver sequined suit jacket is giving us all the inspiration we will be needed. Taking the over the top tone and texture into the realm of tailoring, Off-White and Marc Jacob's silver jackets paired with blue tones is the perfect antithesis to the vintage-inspired 70's sunset trend seen elsewhere. If you prefer your trends more futuristic and icy, silver is a colour that should be on your to-buy list.
