Rooms Hotel Kazbegi
The Caucasus Mountain Range is one of the most dramatic – but unsung – landscapes in the world, with peaks in Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. Now, putting the mountains firmly in the spotlight is Tblisi-based duo Nata Janberidze and Keti Toloraia, who have created the 156-room Rooms Hotel Kazbegi in the small town of Stepantsminda (also known as Kazbegi) in north-east Georgia.
The hotel sits at the foot of the Kazbek Mountain, surrounded by a rugged landscape and woodland – all completely unspoilt. Rooms Hotel brings together Georgia’s history and its present day, with a modernist geometric building made up of steel, glass and timber, all designed to be as discreet as possible. Vintage Soviet Union adverts and film posters throughout, meanwhile, embrace the country’s history without being overshadowed by it.
Natural raw wood, indigenous rugs and rich leather armchairs suit the hotel’s mountainous location and turn a minimalist design into a cosy retreat, taking inspiration from Georgia’s unique Asian and European heritage. The surroundings, meanwhile, are taken advantage of at every possibility – with rooms featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, a large outdoor terrace that provides the perfect space to soak up the outdoors, and an indoor swimming pool with one of the most striking backdrops in the whole of Europe.
