Villa Lola, Iceland

Located just outside Akureyri, northern Iceland’s largest town, Villa Lola is the place to escape to for peace, quiet, and unrivalled natural beauty. Just across from Eyjarfjodur Bay, the villa boasts unrestricted mountain views from every window.
The location and fjord were taken into account when this building was designed, resulting in a home that is sustainable and sympathetic to its surroundings; blending in, rather than sticking out. Inspired by Swiss mountain cabins, a sea-side ranch in California and Japanese spatial efficiency, Villa Lola is made of low-maintenance materials and clad in pre-weathered larch, giving it a muted grey colour.
Built by Icelandic architectural firm Arkís, the villa is split into three separate apartments, with alternating sloping roofs. Making the most of the limited space, this apartment features a mezzanine-level bedroom and twin room with bunk beds. Simple and modern, the apartment is Nordic-chic, with concrete flooring, white walls and bare wood featuring throughout, while splashes of red in the kitchen and bathroom provide a welcome use of colour.
Through full glass doors is a wood-decked terrace; the perfect place to sit out, take in the breath-taking surroundings, and enjoy the northern lights in winter or midnight sun in summer.
