Barbour is best-known for its iconic waxed jackets, existing today as a fourth generation family-owned company. First established in 1894, the brand has a rich heritage in clothing for outdoor and country pursuits, with a product range and customer base that expands across the globe.
Founded in South Shields, North East England, Barbour began as a small manufacturer of oilskins for lighthouse keepers, seamen and motorcyclists, eventually moving across to a fashion brand in its own right under the leadership of Dame Margaret Barbour, who has been the brand’s chairman since 1972.
Adopted by the Sloane Rangers in the 1980s and the likes of Alexa Chung and Alex Turner in the noughties, Barbour has become a brand that is worn for both fashion and function. Today, Barbour is still based in South Shields, creating its iconic wax and quilt jackets, as well as clothing and accessories in its instantly-recognisable tartan.
