Founded in Germany in 1774 by Johann Adam Birkenstock, Birkenstock sandals are renowned for their unique sole designed to flex with the natural movement of walking as well as increase circulation.
Remaining a family of innovative shoemakers, Johann’s great-great-grandson Konrad developed the first contoured insole in 1897, and in 1964 Karl Birkenstock went one step further and developed these inserts into a shoe to make the brand’s first sandal – the Madrid. The original Birkenstock sandal as we now know it was born, with the sole naturally moulding to the foot to create the ultimate fit and support for the wearer’s specific needs.
