Five Brands Doing the Red Trend Best

If there’s one colour that defines AW17, it’s red. It’s not just the burgundy or oxblood that has taken over the catwalks of Autumn/Winters past either (although there is a smattering of that) but every shade of the fiery colour, from tomato and cerise to wine and deep scarlet. It’s a colour that has shaken off its previous connotations that have perhaps caused the fashion industry to avoid it (uber-sexy à la Jessica Rabbit, or that Valentine’s day cliché) and in its place, are looks and pieces that are sophisticated, elegant, fashion-forward.

Just look at Alexander McQueen AW17 and those punk-meets-Snow-White red dresses accessorised with studded boots and a large leather belt, Christopher Kane with his PVC fur-trimmed red coat, or Rodolfo Paglialunga’s collection for Jil Sander where oversized deep red tailoring made up the most stand-out looks. The key take away from the red trend this season, is to wear it head-to-toe – and these are the five brands that are doing it best.

Gestuz

Danish label Gestuz opts for a deep burgundy in its AW17 collection, giving it a contemporary twist with floral prints (see the ‘Sophi’ blazer) and rich wine shades (the ‘Saga’ blouse is an update on the ‘80s silk shirt and is the best one we’ve seen all season).

MM6 Maison Margiela

Taking the red trend by force this season, the MM6 Maison Margiela collection spans everything from Bordeaux-coloured ankle boots and blood red wool coats, to a bright red oversized jumper dress. Red, but definitely not as you know it.

Rupert Sanderson

New to Coggles, London’s Rupert Sanderson is the master of fashion-forward, flattering footwear. For AW17, it’s all about the luxe, rich shades: mulberry velvet heels, sangria suede flats and a sumptuous heeled alternative.

Marc Jacobs

Red was the bright antidote to the shades of browns and blues that largely made up Marc Jacobs’ hip-hop-inspired AW17 collection. The colour manifests itself on nylon cross body bags and backpacks, the now-iconic ‘Shutter’ cross body bag and silk floral dresses.

Vivienne Westwood

The queen of punk, bold style and experimental designs, it’s no wonder that Vivienne Westwood has embraced all things red this season. Look to the Vivienne Westwood Accessories collection for red purses, bags and more, all with Westwood’s signature touch.
